Mt Whaleback is the largest open pit iron ore mine in the world. Situated near the town of Newman in the Pilbara, Western Australia it is one of many mines in this resource rich area with all the product going to the Chinese market. This view of the ore processing areas is taken early one morning from a nearby lookout.

Back again after a long break between posts and I'm finally in the mood and able to post selected pictures of my 5 week road trip from Brisbane on Australia's east coast to Newman in the Pilbara, north western Australia. Although I took 1000's of photos, only my very favourites will be posted.

This first photo was taken at Newcastle (NSW) main beach during a lunch stop between Port Macquarie and Oberon. While I liked the original colour photo, it was really just another sunny, middle of the day beach snap so I gave post-processed it using the tritone option in Photoshop. Now the photo reminds me of old Max Dupaine photos of Bondi Beach in the 30's.

The thing I hate about trying to take good photos on a road trip is that you can't always be at a great location at the best time of day for taking photos. Processing in duotone or tritone can sometimes give an ordinary photo that extra punch.

I went to the RAAF Air show at Amberley RAAF base on Sunday where I took over 500 photos of planes, planes and more planes. This photo is of the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) aerobatic team the Roulettes doing a very exciting manoevre where they flew in and out between each other at high speed.

Mt Ngaurahoe taken from Rangipo Desert on the opposite side of the mountain range in Tongirio National Park (New Zealand). Rangipo Desert is a volcanic "wasteland" of rocks and hardened lava with little plant life, but is oddly scenic in it's own way.

Shorncliffe Pier

Shorncliffe is one of my favourite haunts to take photos. The pier is the prettiest in Brisbane with it's old fashioned lights and structure which makes it a prime spot for wedding photos. On any given weekend there will be at least 2 or 3 wedding parties getting their official photos taken. This photo however was shot on a windy, overcast day so no brides in sight.
